Holmes Beach is a city on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County, facing the Gulf of Mexico. The first homestead was claimed in 1896, and the city was incorporated in 1950. Manatee Public Beach, opened in 1952 at Manatee Avenue and Gulf Drive, is the island's main public beach. In 1954 the city annexed neighboring subdivisions, bringing all of Anna Maria Island under municipal government. Housing includes beach cottages, Gulf-front homes, canal-front properties, townhomes and condominiums.
