Haines City was platted in 1884 after the South Florida Railroad arrived and sits on the Lake Wales Ridge in eastern Polk County. U.S. 17/92 runs through downtown as Hinson Avenue, U.S. 27 passes the city and I-4 lies six miles north. A downtown historic district, the former railroad depot and a lakeside park on Lake Eva are local landmarks. Housing includes historic homes, established neighborhoods, newer subdivisions and townhomes.
