Jefferson, the Jackson County seat, pairs a historic downtown with fast-growing neighborhoods along U.S. Route 129 and Interstate 85. The Crawford W. Long Museum honors the physician known for early use of ether anesthesia, and the restored historic courthouse now serves as a welcome center. Athens and Gainesville are each about 20 miles away.
