East of Athens, Oglethorpe County is defined by open farmland, quiet small towns and the historic county seat of Lexington. U.S. Route 78 links Arnoldsville, Crawford and Lexington with Athens, while Shaking Rock Park in Lexington offers outdoor recreation. Part of Watson Mill Bridge State Park, with its long covered bridge, lies within the county. Housing includes historic homes, rural farmsteads, newer construction and properties on generous acreage.
